Cyberbullying in MySpace Led to Suicide

Internet is very powerful. It is amazing how much information is stored in the internet, you can find out anything with just a click of a finger. Internet is a world unto itself. It can exploit young people's weaknesses. As much usefulness it has to offer, the more danger it also poses.

Just like what happened to a 13 year old Megan Meier who committed suicide and hanged herself in October 2006, allegedly after receiving dozen or more cruel messages, including one stating the world would be better off without her. A woman in Missouri, Lori Drew, 49 was indicted for her alleged role in perpetrating a hoax on the online social network MySpace against Meier.
If convicted on all counts, Drew could face 20 years in prison. Drew who allegedly helped create a MySpace account in the name of someone who didn't exist to convince Meier she was chatting with a 16-year old boy name Josh Evans, was charged with conspiracy and fraudulently gaining access to someone else's computer. Drew inflicted emotional distress on Meier that caused Meier to commit suicide.

How young or how old can a child be to be allowed to use the internet? Parents should be wary about the dangers lurking online. They should be responsible in supervising the use of internet by their children. Young minds are vulnerable, they can be easily swayed and influenced. In my opinion, parental guidance should not be compromised.

I wish things such as bullying never existed but they do. With my kids, I just make sure to teach them right from wrong and that they have the proper tools to both protect and defend themselves from bullying - no matter what form it comes in.
